June 5, 2005-Maryland Art Place is pleased to announce the critic for the 20th Annual Critics' Residency Program. Applicants will be eligible for selection by prominent New York-based independent curator and art critic, Lilly Wei, to participate in studio visits and workshops. The program culminates with a group exhibition and published catalogue of artwork and critical essays. The 2005-2006 Critics' Residency Program will take place from summer 2005 until late spring 2006, and is intended to promote the work of area writers and artists, while advancing their careers and providing artists, writers and audiences with a venue and forum to address critical issues of contemporary art.
Deadline for Applications: July 16, 2005 (Postmarked Or Delivered)
Lilly Wei will review images before arranging studio visits with selected artists in autumn 2005, during which the specific artworks will be selected for the Critics' Picks exhibition (scheduled for spring 2006) at Maryland Art Place. Selected writers will accompany the critic for visits to each artists' studio during the weekend of September 24 and 25, 2005, and also attend a workshop that weekend. Before mid-December, each writer will make follow up visits to artists' studios, and then complete an essay to accompany reproductions of these artists' works for the exhibition catalogue, produced in the winter of 2006. An essential element of this program is the Public Forum, which includes all participants, and is scheduled to occur during the spring 2006 Critics' Picks exhibition. This is a free event that encourages the public to join program participants in a discussion about issues relevant to contemporary art.
