Call for Artists for Maryland General Hospital Mural

by: Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts

The 20,000 square foot project at the Hospital will be the largest mural in Maryland.
August 22, 2005-The Baltimore Mural Program and Maryland General Hospital are looking for an artist or group of artists to design and execute the Maryland General Hospital Mural, a 20,000 square foot project, which will be the largest mural in Maryland. The deadline to submit a proposal is September 1, 2005 at 5 p.m.

The mural will be located on the hospital's wall on the Howard Street side of the building, facing the Light Rail and Antique Row. The wall is brick and contains many windows. The maximum dimension of the mural is 35 by 547 feet. It is acceptable to submit a design that uses segments of the wall.

Artists are encouraged to consider alternate treatments for the wall besides paint. The winning artist or team will receive a commission of $30,000 for the project. The artist(s) will also receive assistance from Maryland Institute College of Art students, Baltimore School for the Art students, and local volunteers. Materials for the mural will be provided by the project, within the limits of the budget.

The current project timeline calls for wall preparation in the early spring of 2006. Work on the mural will begin in April 2006 and conclude in August 2006 with a public dedication planned for September 2006.

All professional artists 18 years of age or older are encouraged to submit proposals, excluding BOPA employees and their family members. A panel of representatives from Maryland General Hospital, the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts, Antique Row, and the Mount Vernon community will review the submitted proposals and select their preferred design. The panel may require the selected artist(s) to modify the design to accommodate community input.

Artists must submit their proposal along with their resume, between three and twenty images of previous work, and a self-addressed, stamped envelope for the return of submitted materials postmarked or hand-delivered by 5:00 p.m. on September 1, 2005 to:
